Easy Access to Column Information
Coltrak400 is an exciting new system for the automatic tracking of HPLC and GC column history and provides an invaluable degree of column tracability for both GLP and non GLP laboratory environments.
The system uses unique combination of barcoding and SmartCard technology to ensure that the analyst has complete confidence in the condition of all columns in the laboratory.
Coltrak400 has a user friendly interface, a combination of SmartCard and Barcode technology and requires no formal training.
Each column will be furnished with a Smart Card which is activated by the barcode attached to the column.
When the column is first used in the larboratory, the column's Smart Card is inserted into the Coltrak400 and is then activated by scanning the barcode on the column.
Once the card has been activated, it is ready to receive data.
When a card is activated two window options are available:
1. The 'Test Performance' tab on the 'card information window' shows the data detailing the column characteristics as supplied by the column manufacturers. Once all the Information on the first window is logged in and the validity of the information is confirmed this window closes permanently because this information will not change during the lifetime of the column.
2. The 'Experimental Data' tag is for the insertion of data relating to the experiment being undertaken. This section has three sub tags at the bottom of the window:
- General Information
- Column Condition
- Notes
The General Information sub tag (shown right) contains all of the information on the initial application, for example the date first used, mobile phase and the first application, reference number and number of injections from the start. Figure 2 shows the window as it would appear on selecting the 'Experimental Data' tag.

The 'Column Condition' sub tag is for storage purposes. This means that when the column is disconnected from the system for storage, information relating to the last time it was used is stored on this page. This would include: column condition when last used, last operators name, date last used and washing procedure for storage purposes.
There is a small 'comments window' which is solely dedicated as an area where information can be typed relating to situations where there have been several applications since the first time the column has been used.
Figure 3 shows the window as it would appear on selecting the 'Column Condition' sub tag.
The 'Notes' sub tag, which is the largest insertion area (51KB on a standard card), is available for typing a complete report or any other comment related to the specific column. This could include a complete report on method development and other information.
Figure 4 shows the window as it would appear on selecting the 'Notes' sub tag. Coltrak400 is not a software package although it requires software to operate the system. It is stand-alone equipment dedicated to keeping column history and automatically upgrades the information. The components of the system are as a bar-code reader, Smart Cards, Smart card reader and writer, mainframe terminal including all other accessories including keyboard, monitor etc
